In November 1964, Betty Kelly, Martha Reeves and Rosalind Ashford (aka Martha Reeves and the Vandellas) were at the top of the charts with their hit "Dancing in the Street."

‘Our music is good Motown music that has stood the test of time’ 7 Jul 2013

As she gets ready to play the Ritz on August 10, 2013  Sarah Walters chats to Detroit legend Martha Reeves

"I'm a firm believer that your life is planned in the womb,” says Motown recording legend Martha Reeves – who this week celebrates the 50th anniversary of her smash hit, Heat Wave.

“Singing at the age of three, it should have dawned on me that was what I was to do – to enlighten people and make them happy. I’m not going to take anybody down, I don’t have lyrics that are morbid and depressive they’re going to damage your character.

“I’ve got vintage music, I still play the songs that people want to hear, and I’m still good ol’ me,” she laughs. “Our music is good Motown music that has stood the test of time.”

In 2013, a Martha Reeves live show looks and sounds pretty much like it did in 1963. Her original band mates The Vandellas – staffed by Rosalind Ashford and Annette Beard – are sadly no longer at her side, but she does have an eight-piece band of musicians, including brass and vocalists, who help her reignite her classic hits Nowhere To Run, Jimmy Mack and Dancing In The Street.

Her introduction to Motown famously started with her accidental appointment as secretary to the label’s songwriter and producer William “Mickey” Stevenson. But her passion for music goes right back to childhood; her grandfather was a local minister in Detroit, and she remembers clearly the moment she fell in love with performing – when she sang solo on Bach’s aria Hallelujah at a school choral concert.

Her dreams of being a star got a bit bump into reality when Mickey scouted her – then performing as Martha LaVaille – singing at a club on a Sunday night. The next day, she skipped off work at the dry cleaners and dropped by Mickey’s office.

“I said: ‘Don’t you remember giving me your card?’. He said: ‘I had no idea you wouldn’t call for an appointment!’. His phone was ringing off the hook, there was no A&R secretary, so he asked me to answer the phone until he got back – and he was gone three hours!

“There was continuous recording, 24/7, happening in Berry Gordy’s house. In three hours, I found out so much about the business. I came back the next day because I had already become indispensable.”

Even then, though, she had no idea she’d end up in the studio. She watched the stars come in and record (Motown’s legendary roll call includes Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, Mary Wells, Diana Ross and The ...

When it did, and Gordy signed the girls in 1962, Martha knew she was ready for the vocal challenge – and thrived on the competition. “Berry Gordy took us to superstar status,” Martha remembers, “so in the recording studio, there was always someone standing there saying, ‘Oh, we like that, we could take that, we could do it better’.

“We were fighting for Berry Gordy’s favour, we wanted to good for him. He saved my life; I wanted to be a singer, and it was just sheer fortune and fate that William Stevenson walked into that nightclub, handed me a card and believed I had talent enough to work for Hitsville USA.

“I wasn’t encouraged to sing by the public. They didn’t think I was cute enough or had enough pretty clothes or fitted the bill for the beautiful. I’m just maybe a plain, common looking person, but I had talent. And beauty is in the soul and the spirit, and my mama always made me feel beautiful.”

The band shone very brightly for around five years, but it wasn’t all plain sailing for Martha, who struggled with addiction. “I’m a survivor – I overcame a lot of things that artists are faced with: you wanna be popular, and the people around you are all involved with drugs,” she recalls.

“It’s sometimes mandatory with the people you’re involved with, the people you give your life to; I won’t say it was that way with Motown and Berry Gordy, but once we were released into the world we were attracted to a lot of the things that don’t help you.

“I think faith is the only thing that can bring people back – you’re not yourself, you’re God’s child and you need to take care of God’s child.”

Drugs weren’t the only challenge facing Martha. Her group was scoring hits at the height of the civil rights movement, and they were regularly mistaken for members of Martin Luther King’s freedom fighters because they were travelling the country on a bus.

The concerts were how they crossed that divide. “When we finished a show, people were hugging in the house who wouldn’t previously have spoken to each other before they heard the Motown sound,” she says.

“We know our music made a difference in uniting people, we know our music enlightened the world to the fact we wanted to be happy, it made them forget about hatred and whatever the differences were – we were all one with the Motown sound.”

When Motown parted company with Detroit in 1972, Martha chose Detroit. She continued as a solo artist, but eventually packed it in to serve in politics. Detroit remains her home, as it does for her son, her three grandchildren and the latest addition to the Reeves family – two month old great grandchild Sophia Rose.

But she has always performed, and a few years ago got back into touring. “The business has changed a lot since I started,” smiles Martha, “there’s a lot of music being made without musicians.

“But I’m a firm believer in having musicians on stage, who cherish music and know how to play it. That’s the fun of it.”

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas play The Ritz on August 10 (6.30pm-10pm). £25 .
