Philadelphia’s M. Kenya Branch Productions, LLC, has just released a new family-friendly, 2 part Christmas DVD. “What You Have Purposed 1 and 2” is a contemporary drama about a new pastor and his wife struggling to hold onto their multi-cultural West Philly church that’s near foreclosure.
This courageous film about faith tells the story of an African American minister, Michael, who introduces a young Chinese American woman, Connie, to Christianity as they unexpectedly fall in love. In part one, Connie has to find the courage to stand up to her controlling father and endure his wrath when he finds out about Michael and their dream of starting a multi-cultural church in West Philly.
In part two, the couple has married but their dream has turned into a nightmare. Despite the encouragement and faith of Connie, fledgling pastor, Michael, questions his spiritual vision after his overbearing mother questions his calling. The church and their dream are on the brink of collapse, but a special Christmas Eve service may change everything.
The film stars Derrick Levine as Michael and Hanh Nguyen as Connie. Actor, Nakia Dillard, who has appeared in the TV series “The Wire” and in the motion pictures “Cost of a Soul” and “Cover,” is featured as Michael’s father. Native North Philadelphian, Kenya Branch is the writer, producer and director of the film.
The DVD also includes informative discussion segments by Pastor Lance Lewis of Christ Redemption Fellowship of Philadelphia and Curtiss Paul DeYoung, Professor of Reconciliation Studies at Bethel University in Minnesota and co-author of the book, Radical Reconciliation: Beyond Political Pietism and Christian Quietism.
This DVD is the third produced by M. Kenya Branch Productions, LLC. Seven other short films were introduced in the “Various Shades of Love” series of seven films. One of the seven films, “Absolutely Wonderful,” an animated story that challenges society’s views of beauty was a finalist at the Maranatha International Christian film Festival in 2011.
M. Kenya Branch Productions, LLC, whose motto is “where entertainment starts with ministry,” was formed in 2011 by Kenya Branch and his wife, Lenora Branch. Mr. Branch has been involved in filmmaking for over 20 years and began his career associated with Bob Lott of the nationally syndicated Gavin and Lott Show TV.
His first produced work was a drama, "Dumped On," that he wrote and co-produced for the ABC’s Philadelphia affiliate, WPVI (6ABC) in February 1992. In March, 1993, his screenplay, "Melting Pot” won the Writers Workshop Ethnic Minority Screenplay competition in Los Angeles.
In 1996, he wrote and produced a short film, "People Like Me," featuring film star, Elizabeth Banks, that challenged racial stereotypes.
Mr. Branch continues to live in the Philadelphia area and plans to write two feature films that uplift, entertain and minister next year.
