CLARK GABLE's Secret Daughter Dies (LORETTA YOUNG, Her Mom)

Movie Talk

Clark Gable’s Secret Daughter Dies

,
The secret daughter of screen stars Clark Gable and Loretta Young, has died at 76. But her fascinating story lives on.

Lewis was conceived while Young was unwed and Gable was married to his second wife, Maria Langham. The two were filming "The Call of the Wild." Their affair resulted in a super secret pregnancy and a hush-hush birth. The actress left her love child at an orphanage for 19 months, returning only then to adopt her. Clearly, this was long before the Internet, DNA testing, or baby daddies.

To add to the mystery, Young kept her daughter in the dark about her family history. Born on November 6, 1935, Judy was eventually raised by her mother and Young's husband, Tom Lewis, whose last name she took. Lewis never did have a relationship with her biological father, although when she was 15, Gable visited herwithout telling her why. It took 31 years for her to learn the truth, which her mother told her privately but would not admit to publicly.

As Lewis told the Philadelphia Inquirerin 1994, when she finally wrote a memoir of her parents' romance and subsequent cover-up: "It was very difficult for me as a little girl not to be accepted ... by my mother, who to this day will not publicly acknowledge that I am her biological child."

Young eventually did admit that Lewis was her daughter with Gable in her authorized biography, " Forever Young," which was published after her death in 2000.

In fact, Lewis resembled her dad, and according to the New York Times, she was teased in school because her ears "stuck out like Dumbo's. Or, as Hollywood rumors had it, they stuck out like Clark Gable's." Her mother hid them under hats, and had her daughter undergo plastic surgery at age 7 to make them less Gable-like.

The daughter of Hollywood royalty first followed an acting career, with roles in "General Hospital," but left the theatrical world to become a therapist. By the time she was a young woman, it was an open "secret" that her father was Clark Gable. Even her husband, Joe Tinney, told her before he married her that it was "common knowledge" that Gable was her dad, but she didn't believe him.

In her 1994 memoir, "Uncommon Knowledge," Lewis notesthat her mother's career would have ended if she had admitted to the out-of-wedlock birth. In her book, Young, who was Catholic, tells her, "Wouldn't you [be unhappy] if you were a movie star and the father of your child was a movie star and you couldn't have an abortion because it was a mortal sin?"

Lewis is survived by her daughter, two grandsons, and two half-brothers -- and a solid place in Hollywood lore.

Norman Brokaw

Norman Brokaw Tribute to Loretta Young

Norman Brokaw
Chairman, William Morris Agency

I had the incredible good fortune to have known Loretta, as her close friend and agent, for almost 50 years.

Loretta Young was the most elegant beauty, inside and out. She was the epitome of a lady, and I learned from her early on in my career that if you can handle yourself with class and dignity - you can work as long as you want to in our business.

Loretta really was a 'one-of-a-kind'. She was lovely, class— class—class, both on and off the screen. She presented the image of serene uprightness and invariably played the strong willed heroine with firm principles.

She was always the "movie queen" with the perfect hairstyle and makeup, dressed in the latest fashion, and up-beat in her view of life.

On and off the screen, she always seemed taller than her 5'5".  I remember on more than one occasion running into her before she would go to daily mass, grocery shopping on Rodeo Drive in the early morning at Jorgensen's foods, driving her own Rolls Royce and getting out elegantly dressed because she felt being part of the business one should always look at their best, even going to the market.

Loretta dearly loved her family. She always talked about them. The first thing she would ask me whenever we spoke was "Norman, dear, how is your family?" I knew how much she loved her own.

I know that all of us loved and are going to miss Loretta very much. I already do - and I always will.

Loretta Young and Clark Gable (Getty Images)

You probably know about actor Clark Gable, best known for delivering the line “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn” in the1939 movie “Gone With the Wind.”

But just a few years before that famous line, he fathered an illegitimate daughter while filing a film adaptation of “The Call of the Wild” on location in Washington state. His partner in that conception was actress Loretta Young, his costar in the 1935 film.

Gable’s daughter was Judy Lewis, an actress who died last week. She was raised by her mother, who told her she was adopted.

The filing of “The Call of The Wild” was plagued with problems, including a massive snowstowm that had teh cast and crew stranded at the Mount Baker Lodge.

From a 1995 Seattle Post-Intelligencer story:

The Mount Baker Lodge had expected only 65 people and was not prepared to accommodate so large a company for so long. Some of the cast and crew not only had to share rooms, but to actually double up in beds. And food soon ran so low at the lodge that teams had to snowshoe down to Glacier and other nearby towns to scrounge for food.,,

Then there were the movie-star problems. Gable repeatedly clashed with Wellman, a scrappy man who never coddled his stars and had had on-set fistfights in the past with both Spencer Tracy and John Wayne. Soon, Gable began arriving late for his scenes and otherwise acting unprofessionally. Then Gable and Loretta Young, who had met for the first time on Mount Baker, fell in love, and Wellman found out that Gable was sneaking into her room at night.

Since Gable was married at the time and the Seattle press was watching every move the company made, this posed the threat of a major scandal – the kind that, in those more puritanical times, could destroy careers and mobilize church groups into mass boycotts of a picture.

Lewis never knew her father. It’s a sad sorry about ear surgery, Hollywood and a whole lot of lies. Read all about it in the New York Times.

Tragedy of the actress who was 'date raped' by Clark Gable, gave birth to his baby - and then kept it secret for EIGHTY YEARS

  • Loretta Young was believed to have had an affair with Gable in 1935
  • Gave birth to his daughter Judy after filming Call of the Wild together
  • Now daughter-in-law Linda Lewis has claimed Young was 'date raped'
  • Says her mother-in-law covered it up to protect her and Gable's daughter
  • Also revealed that she thought the incident was her fault and felt guilty

She was one of the most beautiful actresses ever to step on set but Hollywood star Loretta Young went to her grave in 2000 with a dark secret.

In 1935, the actress was working on a film called Call of the Wild with Clark Gable, then 34 and married to his second wife Maria 'Ria' Franklin Prentiss Lucas Langham.

The pair became close during filming and, shortly after the film wrapped, Young discovered she was pregnant - and went to great lengths to cover it up.

But while the truth about the paternity of her daughter Judy became public before her death, the real story about the circumstances of the little girl's conception have only just emerged.

Young, a devout Catholic with a strong sense of right and wrong, was, according to her daughter-in-law Linda Lewis, the victim of a date rape at the hands of Gable.

According to Lewis, the revelation came after watching an episode of Larry King Live in which the topic was discussed.

Afterwards, the then 85-year-old Young asked Lewis to explain what date rape meant. On hearing her daughter-in-law's reply, she said: 'That’s what happened between me and Clark.'

Lewis, who has since told her story to Buzzfeed journalist Anne Helen Petersen, was horrified but says for Young, the priority was always protecting Judy.

The same fear kept the family quiet as well but following Judy's death aged 78 in 2011, Lewis and her husband Chris, Young's son by her second husband Tom Lewis, decided to go public.

'Judy is not here to be hurt by this,' explains Lewis. 'And that’s what Loretta really wanted to avoid — because who doesn’t want to be conceived in love?'

Young, who had begun her acting career as a four-year-old child, was one of Hollywood's brightest young stars when she met Gable in 1935.

The nine-week shoot for Call of the Wild took place near Mount Baker, in a stretch of wild countryside three hours drive from Seattle.

According to Lewis, Young was prone to 'falling a little bit in love' with her co-stars and spent much of the shoot flirting with Gable who, in return, called her 'my girl'.

But flirtatious though Young might have been, she was a strict Catholic who had been badly hurt a few years earlier after eloping with and then divorcing her first husband Grant Withers.

She also enjoyed a lengthy - if unconsummated - affair with Spencer Tracey, a fellow Catholic who, although separated from his wife, was unable to divorce.

Young, terrified of going to Hell and with warnings from the family priest ringing in her ears, would flirt but never succumbed to advances from her co-stars.

That, however, was about to change. On the train back to Los Angeles from Seattle, the cast were, as Lewis tells it, given separate compartments.

Somewhere between Seattle and Los Angeles, Gable entered her compartment and, a month later, a humiliated Young discovered she was pregnant.

Next came one of the most elaborate cover-ups in Hollywood history, with Young going to extraordinary lengths to keep her condition a secret.

Hidden away in an apartment in L.A's Venice Beach, she eventually gave birth to a daughter, breaking the news to Gable in a telegram that read: 'BEAUTIFUL, BLUE-EYED, BLOND BABY GIRL BORN, 8:15 THIS MORNING'.

Gable, who was not named on the little girl's birth certificate, ignored the missive and never had any real involvement in Judy's life.

Young, however, was making plans to bring her daughter into the fold and arranged to 'adopt' the child - even giving an interview on the subject to a sympathetic newspaper.

Despite her best efforts, rumours of an affair with Gable continued to circulate, with the truth about Judy's paternity becoming something of an open secret.

In the end, Young finally told her daughter the truth of her parentage when she was 23 and demanding to know. Gable had, by this point, died aged 59 ten days after suffering a heart attack.

What Judy never discovered were the real circumstances of her conception - something that Lewis has finally agreed to discuss following a spate of high profile historic rape cases.

'I realized that it’s almost every day,' she explained in an interview with Buzzfeed. 'All these rapes, and the men just keep getting away with it.'

Including, it would appear, Clark Gable.
