Bill Gates recently gave a Commencement speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.
Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!
Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem
. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.
Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes; learn from them.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Motown hitmaker Nick Ashford passes away at 70

Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson

Categories: In Memoriam, Motown, Music
Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Legendary songwriter Nick Ashford died on Monday in a New York hospital at age 70 of complications related to throat cancer.

Ashford enjoyed considerable success during the 1960s and ’70s with his wife Valerie Simpson, who he married in 1974. Together they were the unstoppable production duo known as Ashford & Simpson, who were behind some of the Motown era’s biggest hits. They wrote and produced such classics as “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “You’re All I Need to Get By,” “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand),” “I’m Every Woman,” “Let’s Go Get Stoned,” and “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing.”

Ashford & Simpson, who were inducted into the Songwriting Hall of Fame in 2002, also performed their own music, producing sixteen albums from 1973 to 1996. Their most successful single, “Solid,” reached number one on Billboard‘s U.S. R&B chart in 1984.

Today is an especially sad day for the music world. Just hours before Ashford’s death, another famed songwriter, Jerry Leiber, passed away at age 78 Read Below:

Jerry Leiber, co-writer of 'Stand By Me' and 'Hound Dog,' dies at 78

Legendary songwriter Jerry Leiber, who wrote a canon’s worth of popular music with partner Mike Stolle in the years following World War II, passed away of cardiopulmonary failure earlier today. He was 78 years old.

During his 61-year run with Stoller, Leiber concocted some of the definitive songs in early rock and roll, including hits for Elvis Presley (“Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock”) and a number of rhythm and blues stars (“Stand By Me,” “Young Blood,” “On Broadway”).

Born in Baltimore, Leiber made his way to Los Angeles and met Stoller when he was still in high school. The pair bonded over their love of early blues and R&B, and they began constructing songs together almost immediately.

Stoller crafted most of the music, with Leiber taking on the role of lyricist. They sold their first song in 1950, and by 1952 scored their first real hit with “Kansas City.” In 1953, the pair formed their own record label, but really took off in 1956 when Presley took “Hound Dog” (which Leiber and Stoller had originally penned for Big Mama Thornton) and turned it into a gigantic hit when he performed it on The Milton Berle Showthe notorious television appearance that made images of Presley’s hips as dangerous as a thermo-nuclear device.

Leiber and Stoller’s success skyrocketed thanks to Presley’s continued use of their songs (including “Jailhouse Rock,” “Don’t,” and “Loving You”) and their blossoming abilities as producers—even Phil Spector apprenticed under them for a time. Though they last had a major hit in 1972 (they produced Steeler’s Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle With You,” which is probably most notorious for being the song that scores the ear slicing scene in Reservoir Dogs), their impact on early rock and roll is secure.

Leiber, along with Stoller, is in both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a whole new generation was introduced to their music via Smokey Joe’s Cafe, a lavish Broadway musical review that includ

Best and Worst Dressed; Mr. Blackwell dies

Sunday, October 19, 2008

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Mr. Blackwell, known in Hollywood for creating the best and worst dressed list, died Sunday following complications from an intestinal infection.

Richard Blackwell was born as Richard Sylvan Selzer on August 29, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York.
Blackwell started acting in New York as a young man. Between acting jobs in New York, he had his first taste of fashion, making hats for wealthy socialites and actresses in his apartment attic.
Blackwell later moved to pursue his acting career in Los Angeles. Under the name Dick Ellis, Blackwell appeared in productions such as "Juvenile Court" starring Rita Hayworth, the hit "Dead End", and the Universal picture "Little Tough Guy.
He was signed by the studios to play small parts in the motion pictures and appear with luminaries such as Humphrey Bogart and Gene Kelly while going to school.
It was Howard Hughes who changed his name to Richard Blackwell when he signed him to RKO, but he eventually left acting for a short stint as a Hollywood agent.
As an agent he discovered a talent for design, while making his client's stage costumes. Once again strapped for cash, he finally decided to pursue a career in fashion in 1958.
His line, House of Blackwell, would become synonymous in fashion. An important designer during the 1960s, he became the first in history to present his line on a television broadcast as well as the first to make his line available for plus-size women.
By the early 1960's he had become one of the top designers with his own line, creating fashions for such stars as Jayne Mansfield, Dorothy Lamour, Peggy Lee, Ann Blythe, Jane Russell and a favorite among political wives such as Nancy Reagan and Corretta Scott King.
Around the same time, he hosted his own radio show on KABC in Los Angeles, and through the years he had appeared on virtually every talk show on television with his "Worst Dressed List," naming the biggest fashion fiascoes of the year and the less recognized "Fabulous Fashion Independents."
He is survived by his partner of almost 60 years, Mr. R.L. Spencer.
