The Screenwriter of Tomorrow: What New Media Really Means for Writers
Everyone has heard the term New Media tossed around, but what does it really mean for the screenwriter? Have we learned how to monetize DIY content? Do the writers of today have to pick up a camera to survive? Can being transmedia make the difference in your writing career? Learn from writers working in new media and related media (graphic novels, short film, etc.) how you can expand your career by thinking outside of your writing space.
DMA - (Donna Michelle Anderson) Founder and CEO of The CLIC, has spent more than a decade producing top-rated television and new media content for CBS, Bravo, BET, A&E, TLC and more. In 2007, she made the switch from broadcast and cable to online and mobile, launching Columbia College Hollywood's new media department and creating the first “social” online production software (Show Starter Scheduling & Budgeting Plus was named one of MovieMaker magazine's "Top 40 Indie Film Friendly Companies"). Aaron Mendelsohn - Partner, Chief Creative Officer, Virtual Artists, Inc. Aaron has been a working screenwriter for 15 years. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Writers Guild of America West. During the recent Writers Strike, Aaron brought together a group of top writers from Hollywood to launch Virtual Artists, Inc., a writer-owned studio that produces sponsor-supported, "water cooler" entertainment for the Web. They completed their “A” round of financing late last year and are in development on their first slate of shows.
Alec McNayr - Writer and producer at Space Shank Media, and, along with his partner Robert Gustafson, has developed, written, and produced TV and online projects for ABC, Stage 9 Digital, HBO, and mDialog. He also co-authors a regular column covering new media for Script magazine, and serves as an inaugural member of the International Academy of Web Television, the voting body for the Streamy Awards.
Robert Gustafson – Producer / Director, most recently produced American Idol and American Idol Extra.
Rafi Mamlian – West Coast Sales Director for blip.tv, primarily responsible for the generation of revenue for blip.tv and show creators from the West Coast sales territory. Based in San Francisco for the past 10 years, Rafi has sold advertising for media brands such as C|Net, The Onion and AccuWeather.
